APRILIA RSV Mille (2003 Model)
Original technical solutions, development in parallel with the SBK racer and, above all, passion and dedication to the unrivalled quality of every individual component have turned the Aprilia RSV Mille into a living legend in terms of track success, sales and image. The Mille success story that has paid back in full Aprilia's courage to innovate and use high technology. It is no coincidence that the RSV Mille was the best selling sports twin in Europe in 2001 and that it has won worldwide acclaim over the last three years, with over 20,000 bikes sold.
The RSV Mille is a high technology supersport of superior manufacturing quality and unmistakable, unique styling.
The RSV Mille introduced a whole new concept in large engine capacity supersport motorcycles. History has now shown that the Mille thoroughly deserves its reputation as the best production twin for on-track use.
2003 sees new horizons opening for the Aprilia RSV Mille. Not only has the bike acquired eye-catching new colours, but many aspects of design have improved too, including the tail and burnished exhaust system.
The bike's ergonomics have got even better too, with a new passenger seat and new racing heel guards for the rider.
The aerodynamics have been enhanced by a new front mudguard, and riding comfort is better still thanks to new anti-vibration bar ends.
The most important change, however, is certainly the brand new close ratio gearbox that does more than ever to express the competitive soul of this prestigious 60-degree V twin.
The Aprilia RSV Mille's technical specifications set the performance standard for all production twins. But the Aprilia RSV Mille is built around an unbeatable chassis too. The super-rigid frame and perfect weight distribution enable all riders to improve their performance on the track with ease and confidence. The feeling that clicks in immediately between rider and machine is one of the Aprilia RSV Mille's strong points.
DESIGN
The Aprilia RSV Mille is built for and around the rider. This race winner is designed to maximise the performance of both man and machine. Aggressive, modern, and extreme, the Aprilia RSV Mille also sets the standard for this class of motorcycle in ergonomics and rider protection. Less wind buffeting means less fatigue and improved, longer lasting concentration for a constant level of performance over extended riding times. Just ask our SBK championship riders - the men who give the input to Aprilia's R&D; section to develop the RSV Mille in parallel with the latest race technology.
The Mille's aerodynamics, already the standard-setter for this class of motorcycle, have been improved even further with the new slimmer tail and front mudguard that provides a smoother air flow around the fork stanchions.
Extensive wind tunnel testing has ensured that the new mudguard improves aerodynamic penetration and front end stability at high speed, and channels more air through the radiator, with obvious benefits for engine running temperature.
While aggressively and boldly styled, the RSV Mille still allows the rider to become one with the machine.
The new, slimmer tail makes the rear end look more streamlined and aggressive but still affords a more comfortable riding position for the passenger.
The passenger seat also allows the passenger to sit lower down and not tower over the rider, with clear performance benefits when riding two up. The thinner seat also makes it easier for the rider to get on and off the bike.
New racing heel guards reduce interference with all types of boot, making it easier to operate the rear brake and gear change levers and consequently improving ergonomics and safety. The even lighter new heel guards are just one of many components contributing to the weight reduction achieved with the 2003 Mille.
Thorough ergonomic research has also led to a completely new bar end design, giving more effective vibration damping and a safer, more comfortable, ride.
The new silencer in burnished and polished steel makes the bike look even more aggressive.
ENGINE
This 60 degree V twin is the envy of the competition for its performance, reliability, compactness and weight. Though putting out a mighty 130 horsepower at the crank, the power unit delivers smoothly and progressively, with extremely limited levels of noise and vibration.
The 2003 RSV Mille has been fitted with a new, close ratio gearbox to make the most of the exceptional power from the Aprilia V twin. Compared to the 2002 gearbox, the 2003 unit has a longer first, second and third gear and closer fifth and sixth gears. The result is even more blistering acceleration with sensational pickup coming out of bends on the road or track. The new box allows the engine to respond even more brilliantly in the higher gears, making the bike faster and even more fun to ride.
The 2003 model features the same exclusive technical characteristics that have made the RSV Mille such a winner in competitive and commercial terms:
•60-degree V twin design, with 4 valves per cylinder and double overhead cams with mixed gear/chain timing drive.
•Electronic fuel injection with 51 mm throttle bodies and one injector per cylinder.
•CDI capacitor discharge ignition combined with Twin Spark Ignition (TSI) with two spark plugs per cylinder. Ignition timing is controlled by the same integrated engine management system that also controls fuel injection.
•Dry sump lubrication, for a more rigid and compact sump than wet sump engines, with no risk of lubrication failure under near-the-limit track conditions (fierce acceleration and braking, wheelies). The RSV Mille engine is equipped with a second trochoidal pump on the return line, a separate oil reservoir, and an oil cooler mounted in front of the engine.
•Mixed gear/chain valve timing drive with the two drive gears (one per timing chain) located in the engine block to reduce cylinder head dimensions.
This sophisticated twin also incorporates the following exclusive Aprilia patents:
•AVDC (Anti Vibration Double Countershaft).
•Hydraulic action clutch assisted by the patented PPC (Pneumatic Power Clutch) system to control rear wheel bounce.
The clutch is equipped with progressive action dampers that engage to match the engine torque being delivered at all times, ensuring silky smoothness and eliminating clutch noise at low revs. Thanks to the special design of the clutch plates and to the clutch lubrication system, this unit gives an exceptional progressive action, long working life, and low lever forces.
FRAME
The frame of the Aprilia RSV Mille has frequently been defined as an "engineering masterpiece". The sloping twin-spars in extruded aluminium connect to aluminium-magnesium alloy castings. This rational, super-lightweight structure is recognised to give the greatest torsional rigidity of any production motorcycle frame.
SUSPENSIONS
The Aprilia RSV Mille comes with a 43 mm Showa upside-down fork, with adjustable preload, compression and rebound on both legs. Front wheel travel is 120 mm.
The rear suspension uses an integrated aluminium Sachs piggy back monoshock, also adjustable in preload, compression, rebound, and length.
The rear suspension linkages (single and double arm) are functional and effective, embodying as they do Aprilia's Superbike experience. These new high technology linkages give a more progressive and effective damping action on the road and on the track.
The fully adjustable suspensions allow all riders to quickly and easily set the bike up exactly as they want, to match personal preferences, riding style, and use (road or track). And all components on the RSV Mille are top level items, so you can forget about costly add-ons to achieve a perfect track-ready setup.
BRAKES
Without a shadow of doubt, Brembo Gold front brakes are the best and technically most advanced conventional brakes on the market today.
They use a four piston calliper (with 34 mm pistons) and four separate sintered pads (one per piston). Triple bridge technology (with an additional central reinforcement bridge) gives the highest structural rigidity of any conventional calliper type brake unit.
The 320 mm double floating front disk incorporates a narrow braking band (for reduced weight and inertia) and an exclusive Aprilia 6 leg alignment system.
This system is incredibly effective and reliable, ensuring super-short stopping distances, great feeling and modulability, and fade-free long life action.
The rear brake is also a Brembo Gold unit, with a 220 mm stainless steel disk, twin 32 mm piston calliper, and sintered pads.
Both the front and rear brakes use aeronautical metal braided lines to eliminate the pressure variations associated with conventional rubber brake lines and ensure maximum braking precision.
COMPONENTS
•The fuel tank is manufactured in rotational nylon for minimum weight. Rotational nylon is perfect for use on the track, and even more resistant than sheet metal to small knocks and scratches. The filler cap features a machined ring and matt chrome finish.
•New racing rider footrests, and aluminium passenger footrests.
•The digital-analog multi-function dashboard incorporates integrated injection system self-diagnostics and a 40 memory chronometer operated by the passing signal (headlight flasher). The instruments have amber back-lighting for racing feel and optimum legibility under all conditions.
•The front headlight cluster is manufactured from a special plastic to ensure lightness and optimum weight distribution at a point critical to ridability. The depth and width of the beam combined with its high intensity and uniformity provide extremely high visibility lighting.
•Permanently lit low beam headlights.
In terms of product quality the Aprilia RSV Mille has raised even further the extremely high standards that have already established Aprilia as market leader. And quality means not only product quality but above all else quality of design, as ISO 9001 certification of all phases of the production cycle clearly demonstrates.
