At the end of the 1980's the DR600 was the biggest offroad bike Suzuki had to offer. Honda had already put out its 650 Dominator and Suzuki's DR600 wasnt't quite powerful enough for the customers who knew there were bigger machines on the market. So Suzuki decided to make an larger and upgraded version of the DR600.
The DR650 arrives in the beginning of 1990 in two different versions: DR650 Djebel (also called DR650R Dakar on some markets) and DR650RS. The appearence of the bikes are quite different but they shared the same mechanics. The most obvious differences between the models are that the Djebel (DR650R) didn't have the RS model's fairing and it had a dirt bike styled higher front mudguard. The RS was a lighter model, featuring smaller exhaust system etc.
The DR650 engine is basically an enlargened DR600. It simply got bigger bore and longer stroke. But there's several differencies between the DR600 and the DR650 models. The whole bike, including the frame and suspension, was upgraded. The bigger brother is more comfortable than the 600 and its riding position is quite suitable for riding on the road as well on dirt.
The both DR650 models featured a fuel tank of 21 liter and a massive aluminum luggage carrier.
